Summary note
"The exhibition showcases a diverse body of work that reveals Foley's staunch commitment to the political: From a delicate etching of a single poppy, titled Opium #3 -- Aboriginal (2008), to her series of self-portraits in the guise of a Seminole woman, the pieces address issues of indigenous identity, ownership, and racism. Nowhere are these themes more strikingly expressed than in the startling 2004 photographic series "HHH (Hedonistic Honky Haters)," showing seven figures dressed in vibrant robes and black hoods that eerily recall the haunting costumes of the Klu Klux Klan. Here, as in such previous provocative exhibitions as "Lick My Black Art" and "No Shades of White," Foley emerges as a formidable voice, encouraging viewers to reexamine their own cultural and historical stereotypes."--Artinfo.
