Op 21 februari 2018 is het 400 jaar geleden dat de oudste zoon van Willem van Oranje stierf in Brussel. De erfprins komt in de geschiedenisboeken nauwelijks voor, omdat zijn halfbroers Maurits en Frederik Hendrik na de dood van hun vader stadhouders werden van de Republiek. Philips Willem zuchtte namelijk als gijzelaar in Madrid, werd in de Noordelijke Nederlanden na 30 jaar gevangenschap beschouwd als een katholieke spion en voerde lang een bitterde strijd met zijn halfbroers over de erfenis van hun vader. Dit boek doet Philips Willem eindelijk recht.
