Summary note
The Roman army played a significant role in the process of Romanization of Galicia. After the annexation of the Galician territory, the Romans favored the inclusion of indigenous Galicians in their army, at first through forced enlistment, and later in a more voluntary way. The military became a means of social advancement for the Galicians, and also contributed to the introduction of Roman systems and forms and production into the region, especially in the sectors of mining and agriculture. At the same time, the presence of the army (and of its veterans who settled in Galician territory) encouraged the development of urbanism, as urban centers arose around military camps. The military also influenced the religion of the native Galicians through the introduction of the deities of the Roman pantheon.
