This book presents the first cult topography of Aphrodite in South Italy and Sicily. On the basis of archaeological, epigraphical, numismatic and literary testimonies 43 sites are investigated, aiming to give a comprehensive picture of the cult of Aphrodite in Western Greece from the foundation of the first Greek cities to the early Roman Empire. Beside the Greek poleis, the regions of the indigenous population are considered. Particular emphasis is given to the multiple dimensions of Aphrodite: love and beauty, fertility and procreation, protection of youth in rites of passage and for the citizen-body of entire poleis. This variety of aspects is mirrored in the location and the architectonic structures of cult places as well as in the spectrum of votive-offerings.
