    Summary note
The Funglode de Periodismo awards, presented annually, seek to honor young Dominican journalists who are blazing a new trail in investigative reporting. This volume includes the winning articles of 2012. Senabri Silvestre, whose article won first place, writes about the little-known hardships faced by Dominicans who have emigrated to Puerto Rico. Ángel García reports on an innovative literacy project among the children of one barrio in San Cristóbal. Doris Pantaleón and Wanda Méndez deliver a piece on adolescents who have come into conflict with the law, and on the role of correctional institutes in their rehabilitation. Lery Laura Piña writes about Dominicans who have emigrated to Spain, and the troubles that they are facing under the current financial crisis. Finally, Kathia Hernández reports on the survival of the population living around the Ozama river.
