"The first part [of this book] was an address delivered on August 13th [1931] ... at the first Conference on management problems of small industries at Silver Bay, New York. It was published in the October, 1931 issue of 'Mechanical Engineering'. The second part was an address delivered on December 2, 1931, at the annual meeting of the American society of mechanical engineers in New York city and with some omissions was published in the December 31, 1931, issue of the 'American machinist'."--Foreword.
