Summary note
"In this biographical account, Wittman chronicles the wartime journey of a young Romanian Waffen-SS conscript. Wittman follows his struggle through some of the most ferocious theatres of World War II up to the day of Germany's unconditional surrender, only to find that the young Romanian's Balkan nightmare had only begun. The soldier continues to suffer through a high-security internment camp in Italy and experience further hunger and alienation in the post-war chaos of West Germany.
Offering a cultural study of Saxon life during World War II as well as a unique view of the conflict through the eyes of a Waffen-SS conscript, Wittman has managed to appeal to the military historian and general reader alike."--BOOK JACKET.
