Summary note
"This addition to the Bible of Judaism Library series focuses on Lamentations Rabbah -- the compilation of exegeses of the Book of Lamentations that augments and clarifies its meaning. Following his introductory chapter on the message of Lamentations, Professor Neusner presents analytical translations and expositions of midrashic treatments of specific texts: Petihta 1, 23, and 24; Parasha 1 (Lamentations 1:3, 5, 16) and Parasha 2 (Lamentations 2:2, 2:3, and 3:16-18). The book concludes with comments on Israel and history, and the movement in Israel from events to rules. Throughout the book, Professor Neusner stresses that Lamentations resolutely deals with the theological question of the validity of God's covenant with Israel in light of calamities through time--a question that has special force even today"--Back cover.
