Summary note
The controversy provoked by the break-up of Christianity into one 'catholic' and several 'protestant' denominations gave rise to a growing body of literature from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. The written word, especially the printed word, was brandished in theological and philosophical debate. Yet questions of interpretation, as well as the emergence of 'authors', became philosophical and theological problems in their own right, and the autonomous disciplines of exegesis and hermeneutics evolved.
