Summary note
This volume is derived from a collection of essays first presented at a conference held at Long Island U. in February 1998, to honor Paul Robeson's memory on the hundredth anniversary of his birth. Some of the essays appeared in Pennsylvania History: A Journal of Mid-Atlantic States (Winter 1999, volume 66, number 1). Additional essays were added to create this volume of 18 works, written by scholars and activists, and exploring Robeson's significance as a singer and political activist; his efforts to achieve solidarity between African Americans and Jews; the important role played by his wife, Eslanda Goode Robeson, in his struggles; his founding of the Freedom newspaper during the Korean War; the way conservative Americans turned against him in the press and tried to silence his voice; and his contemporary relevance. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
