Summary note
Selecting the President: From 1789 to 1996 explores all important aspects of the presidential selection process: the candidate's decision to enter the presidential race, campaign strategy and fund-raising, primaries and caucuses, national party conventions, the general election campaign, and the electoral college.
The volume also looks at the transition period when presidents-elect assemble their White House staffs and contains detailed historical summaries of each presidential election from George Washington's first electoral victory in 1789 to Bill Clinton's second in 1996.
