本书运用历史学与社会学相结合的研究方法, 提出了分析方志体系中既体现国家意志又最贴近民间生活的地方县志的解读路径.通过分析明清现存七部瑞金县志, 瑞金族谱资料等文献, 考察县志编纂源流与作者构成, 县志编纂与地方宗族, 县志编纂与地方文化意识, 县志的阅读与利用, 探讨县志编纂与中国传统社会结构的内在联系.作者认为, 在方志编修制度化与经常化的明清朝代, 县志编纂逐渐成为地方官绅建构地方文化形象的重要平台, 也逐渐成为各种社会势力竞相染指的话语权力和文化资本.在这层意义上, 县志是被那些掌握着县志编纂权的地方官绅基于现实社会的权力结构, 价值观念和私人目的, 对同样隐含着权力, 观念与目的的文本如正史, 方志, 族谱, 文集, 传说, 碑刻及其他类型文本进行筛选, 组合, 解释而建构起来的"地方历史."
