Summary note

A retrospective comprising more than 200 works - including paintings, prints, drawings and constructions - spanning five decades of intense and fruitful career of Rosa Tavares. The exhibition was curated by Amable López Meléndez, art critic and Chief Curator of the MAM. Tavárez studied with some of the great Dominican Masters such as Yoryi Morel and Jaime Colson. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally. Among the most important were the exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo in 1982 and 2001 and drawings exhibited at the Museum of Art and History of San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1988. She has also participated in important international exhibitions such as the Museum of Printmaking in Italy. She has received numerous prizes, awards and distinctions, including the National Medal of Merit awarded in 1994 and 2005. Recognition for her Contribution to Education and the Arts was awarded to her by the Universidad Ibero-Americana (UNIBE) in 2007. In 2009, the Congress of the Dominican Republic dedicated the fifth floor of its building to the artworks of Rosa Tavarez.
