These women wrote for, edited, and published radical and feminist periodicals that, until now, have been left unstudied. This significant gap in the scholarship has left us without an accurate sense of Spanish women's involvement in the public realm. Spanish Female Writers and the Freethinking Press, 1879-1926 recovers the lost history and literary contributions these women made to the so-called Generation of 1898. Using their extensive published works, Arkinstall not only illuminates the lives of Domingo Soler, Lopez de Ayala, and Sarraga, but traces the connections between feminism, freethinking, republicanism, freemasonry, anarchism, and socialism. By placing these women's work in the broader literary, social, and political context of the period, Arkinstall's study makes a major contribution to our understanding of the central role of women in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century democracy in Spain. 599 Princeton permanent acquisition. 600 10 Domingo Soler, Amalia, |d1835-1909. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2002049316 600 10 López de Ayala, Ángeles. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014115945 600 10 Sárraga, Belén de. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr99039762 650 0 Women and journalism |zSpain |xHistory. 650 0 Feminism |zSpain |xHistory. 650 0 Women |xPolitical activity |zSpain |xHistory. 650 0 Spanish literature |xWomen authors |xHistory and criticism. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008112119 650 0 Women intellectuals |zSpain |vBiography. 650 0 Feminists |zSpain |vBiography. 776 08 |iPrint version:Arkinstall, Christine, author. |tSpanish female writers and the freethinking press, 1879-1926 |z9781442647657 |w(OCoLC)862010044 830 0 Toronto Iberic 910 JSTOR DDA purchased
