Ana M. Gómez-Bravo situates this cultural production within its social, political, and material contexts. She places the different forms of document production fostered by a shifting political and urban model alongside the rise in literacy and access to reading materials and spaces. At the core of the book lies an examination of both the materials of writing and how human agents used and transformed them, giving way to a textual agency that pertains not only to writers, but to the inscribed paper. Gómez-Bravo also explores how authorial and textual agency were competing forces in the midst of an era marked by the institution of the Inquisition, the advent of the absolutist state, the growth of cities, and the constitution of the Spanish nation. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 533 Electronic reproduction. |bNew York |nAvailable via World Wide Web. 588 0 Print version record. 651 7 Spain. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204303 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 650 0 Incunabula |zSpain. 650 0 Transmission of texts |zSpain. 650 0 Paratext |zSpain |xHistory. 650 0 Paper. 650 0 Writing materials and instruments |xHistory. 650 0 Authorship |xSociological aspects. 650 0 Spanish literature |yTo 1500 |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Literature and society |zSpain |xHistory |y15th century. 648 7 To 1500 |2fast 776 08 |iPrint version:Gómez-Bravo, Ana M.
