Summary note
One of the volumes printed at the press of the Greek College, founded in 1513 by Pope Leo X and the humanists Angelo Colocci and Janus Lascaris. Although the first master of the press was the celebrated Cretan printer, Zacharias Kalliergis, he did not set up his press in the College as had originally been planned, but found outside financial backing and finished his famous edition of Pindar--the first Greek book printed in Rome--in Cardinal Chigi's villa in August 1515. Colocci and Lascaris, with papal financing, did set up a press in the College, and beginning in 1517, published five titles, including the Apophthegmata, printed by Carmelio.
Notes
"Imprimé à Rome au Colleg̀e grec, vers 1519"--Legrand. Probably printed by Vittore Carmelio (in Callierges's type) rather than Angelo Colocci; based on studies of Hobson and Barker.
Adams (A2032) gives Z. Kallierges as the printer.
First part of title transliterated from the Greek; text in Greek.
Text printed in Greek type; Latin title and prayer at end in roman type; spaces left for capitals, with guide letters.
Signatures (in Greek): [alpha]-[xi]⁸ [omicron]⁴; [alpha]-[gamma]⁸ [delta]⁶.
Source acquisition
Acquired with matching funds provided by the Program in Hellenic Studies with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund.
