Biographical/Historical note
Priest-monk Nikephoros-Nikolaos Docheiaritēs was a major figure of Mount Athos monasticism, distinguished in the field of ecclesiastical music as a chanter, productive scribe of musical manuscripts and accomplished teacher of chanting art. He was one of the introducers of the so-called “New Method” of musical notation into Athos. More than forty of his manuscripts have survived, almost all of them in Mount Athos.

Greek autograph manuscript by Nikolaos Docheiaritēs. Organized in the form of Byzantine music lessons. Contains music by Petros Bereketēs, Chourmouzios, Daniēl Prōtopsaltēs, Balasios hiereus, kyr Iōannēs [Prōtopsaltēs], Synesios monachos Ivēritēs, and Manouēl ho Chrysaphēs.

Physical description: 16 double lines a page, 4to, 245 x 155 mm. Collation: [1]7 [2]-[7]8:55 ff. (last two leaves blank, lacks the first leaf of quire [1] and probably one quire before it; minor repairs on folio 1, marginal water-staining, somewhat browned, a few leaves soiled; modern pagination. It is written in Greek script and post-Byzantine neumes in blank ink with titles, initial letters and lettering in red ink.
