Summary note
The Bryn Mawr College Library is one of the great liberal arts college in the United States, with more than a million volumes and extensive historical collections. The collections reflect the school's history as one of the earliest women's colleges, and one with doctoral programs from the time of its founding in 1885. Among the collection's strengths are the travel accounts written by Europeans travelling throughout the world, beginning with works issued in the late fifteenth century. The parts of the collection digitized through NCCO covers books published from the late eighteenth century to the early 1920s. Highlights of the collection include works on Africa from early British and French expedition accounts to early-twentieth-century colonial narratives and documents; the British in India, particularly from the first half of the nineteenth century; classical and Middle Eastern travels to archaeological sites; writings on European cities, particularly London and Paris; and accounts by women travelers. A guide to the travel accounts printed before 1850 is available online at http://www.brynmawr.edu/library/speccoll/guides/travel/index.html.
