"The Ugly Duckling is a comic drama film directed by KWAK, Kyung Taek. The movie is based on the director's true story when he served his military duty. The movie follows Private JEON, Nak-man, 23-year-old civil service man, in 1987 when Korea was in a confused political stage. Nak-man struggles in the army and is forced to abuse inmates at the installation confinement facility. Through his army life Nak-man realizes the problem of society and fights against it. K.T. KWAK (KWAK Kyung-taek) is one of Korea's most established directors. Since his feature debut in 1997, a number of his films have surpassed 1 million admissions, including (2005), (2007) and the co-directed (2008). With the port city of Busan as its backdrop, his movie (2001) set a new box office standard in Korea with over 8 million admissions."--Korean Movie Database (KMDb).
