Ex copy: Edward Shippen (1703-1781) in mss. covered five preliminary blank pages with an introductory catechism of musical education and notation (beginning "What is Music?" and "What is the Gamut?"), through which he taught himself to read music. He further rehearsed his lessons by inscribing rhyming couplets here under the rubric "John Playford's Rules" (i.e., those of the London music publisher John Playford the Elder, 1623-1686). In the margins of 14 additional pages Shippen annotated Brady and Tate's music-less text (in the process practicing his square-note notation) by writing out measures of named tunes next to appropriate Psalms, e.g., "St. Mary's" by Psalm VIII, "Southwell" by Psalm XXV, "French 100" by Psalm CIII, etc. Shippen also copied onto the first four margins of the 23rd Psalm, an identifiable paraphrase he evidently preferred to Brady and Tate's.
Provenance
Ex copy: Bookplate of Robert Shippen (d. 1745, Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford and Principal of King's Hall, and Professor of Sacred Theology.)
Ex copy: Signed on titlepage: Edward Shippen's 1741.
