Summary note
In the mid-1930s the ambitious Irmina travels to London to begin training as a bilingual secretary. There she meets Howard, a young black man, and defends him against prejudice. Their relationship comes to an abrupt end when Irmina, beset by the political situation, returns to Berlin. In Nazi Germany, she faces the possibility of obtaining the prosperity she desires, but it means submitting to the Nazi regime without question. Irmina must choose between personal freedom and social advancement.
