A miscellany of fables, riddles, short stories, short poems, epitaphs, and precepts (content is the same as in Baldwin's "Little polite tales").
Notes
Tentatively dated between 1774 date inscribed in Cotsen copy and 1754, when when Baldwin apparently discontinued use of "junior" in his imprints (cf. C.Y. Ferdinand, "Richard Johnson Junior, Bookseller," in Studies in Bibliography, no. 89, p. 259).
"Christmass" as printed on title page.
"Adorned with sculptures" --After title, between 2 horizontal rules.
"Price only sixpence, bound & gilt" -- At foot of title page.
"Printed according to Act of Parliament" --At head of frontispiece.
"Printed for R. Baldwin" --Below frontispiece.
Engraved frontispiece and title page, both printed in black (frontispiece is reversed from version in "Little polite tales").
Title page epigram: "Example draws where precept fails. / And sermons are less read than tales / Mat. Prior."
Illustrations: Engraved title page and frontispiece, woodcut vignettes at the the head of fables and tales, and decorative woodcut headpiece at the head of riddles
