Biographical/Historical note
Joseph Estourmel was a French government official, traveler, artist, and writer. From June 1832 to September 1833, he traveled across Asia Minor, Greece, Syria, and Egypt with the Swiss artist Wolfensberger.
Summary note
Estourmel's sketchbook from his travels in the Levant in August 1832, consisting of 12 watercolors and 9 drawings in pencil, each titled on verso, primarily of Greek sites. Bound in half morocco; upper cover inscribed: "acheté à Rome 24 mai 1832 / J. d' Es." The watercolors are titled as follows: 1) "3 aout 1832. Athenes. acropolis pris du musée," 2) "3 aout 1832. Athenes. pnyx, tribune aux harangues. mur des amazones," 3) "3 aout 1832. mont Anchesme, acropolis, mont hymette pris de la route du pirée. Sur le devant des debris de la grande muraille construite par Cimon refaite par Conon," 4) "4 aout 1832. port de l'ancienne ville de Salamine vers l'entrée duquel se livra la bataille. Dans le fond les montagnes de la côte d'Eleusis d'où Xerxès assista à sa defaite, mont anchesme, acropolis d'Athènes, mont hymette," 5) "5 aout 1832.
