Summary note

Electronic reproduction of material relating to the history of film and visual media from the Bill Douglas Centre. Founded in 1994, the Centre houses material collected by Bill Douglas and Peter Jewell over their lifetimes. The material constitutes a research collection of international significance, illustrating the development of optical recreation and popular entertainment from the late 18th century to the present day. The selection included here brings together publications relating to optical recreation and the early development of the motion picture industry, and a range of primary source documents: movie magazines, printed ephemera, programmes, sheet music, cigarette cards, postcards, games, toys and other merchandise from the early and pre-cinema era.
