    Biographical/Historical note
Alois Beer (1840-1916) was a professional photographer working from a studio in Klagenfurt, Austria. He left Vienna in 1867 to set up this studio. He made two journeys to Greece and the surrounding islands in 1885 and 1889 and it is presumed that this album was prepared after one of these trips.
    Summary note
Folio album containing 40 mounted albumen photographs (typical size 26.9 x 19 cm) depicting towns of Corfu and the surrounding countryside. Included are several images of Palaiokastritsa Bay, Mon Repos (the park and the entrance to the palace), Gasturi, Pelekas, Hypsos, Benitses, Kastrades, the citadel, the Royal Palace (Achilleion), the Grand Hotel Belle Venice, the monument of Sir Thomas Maitlandand, views of Corfu from Lido and the Castle, and scenes of everyday life. There are also six images of wineries, a country retreat, as well as of a valley in Patrai and Achaia, including one image of wine barrels. Each photograph signed "ALOIS BEER, K.K. HOF-PHOTOGRAPH" on the lower left corner on the mount; a second inscription on the right corner on the mount reads: "KLAGENFURT." In a very good condition.
