Summary note
The intense life of Pernambucan artist Cícero Dias (b. Brazil 1907-2003), is now available through his own writing. One of the most important Brazilian painters of the 20th century, Cícero Dias who was born in Escada, (63 km from Recife), died before finishing his memoirs, which he titled "Eu Vi o Mundo...", in reference to his most famous work "Eu vi o mundo... ele começava no Recife (I saw the Worldand it starts in Recife) a large panel concluded in 1929, that extends more than 11 meters. The present autobiography also includes a text by his companion of more than sixty years, Frenchwoman Raymonde Dias, which filled many of the gaps left unfinished by the author, such as important details of their life in Paris in the midst of the II World War, their exile in Lisbon and their return to a liberated France. With a narrative not always linear, Dias' memories recall his childhood in the large estate of the colonial sugar-cane mill Jundiá (Pernambuco), his friendship with countryman Gilberto Freyre; his bohemian life in Rio de Janeiro alongside Murilo Mendes, Manuel Bandeira and Villa-Lobos; his strong friendship and the debates with the main European artistic personalities of that time, such as Pablo Picasso and André Breton. The edition includes unpublished and rare pictures, along drawings of the custom designs created by Cícero for a ballet of Mário of Andrade, images published in this book by the first time.
