"A once popular Methodist hymn, "In de dark wood, no Indian nigh" has been falsely attributed to the Pequot author William Apess (1798-1839) since the nineteenth century, though it was in fact by Thomas Daniel Cowdell (1769-1833), a British emigrant to Halifax, Nova Scotia."--Dealer's notes.
