Summary note
During the 18th century the "boticas" (old pharmacies) in the state of Puebla had the custom of painting with baroque allegories the doors of the cupboards where they kept their medical instruments and substances to elaborate their medical preparations. The present book is a deep study of the multiple readings of the collection of 12 large format oil canvas (12 m. long x 3.26 m high) painted by Miguel Jerónimo Zendejas with the patronage of poet José Ignacio Rodríguez Alconedo and that mounted in wood frames were used as doors of a large storage room or furniture that kept the archives of the brotherhood "Cofradía de San Nicolás Tolentino" (Puebla), along with drugs and valuable substances used in the colonial drugstore of the guild. The author documents the existence of the material and its multiple interventions during the 20th century (dismemberment, total or partial hiding, incomplete reconstructions in formats different from its original purposes, etc.), since 1913 (the year in which it was probably dismantled) and fortunately bought by modernist poet José Juan Tablada to be installed in his house in Mexico City. In 2003 the collection of canvas was professionally restored and arranged in what was probably its original composition and function and exhibited in the Museo Nacional de Historia (Chapultepec). This is a major research work can be defined in what is now called the new trends of art history, particularly in the study of "the intention, reception and re-significance of a specific work of art", trying to preserve the enigmatic character of any artistic production, as they "say something while at the same time hide something else"
