Summary note
The recovery of Western Europe in the years after World War II seemed miraculous at the time and perhaps it seems even more so today at the end of the Cold War. Duignan and Gann show how important a role the United States played in rebuilding Europe and how reluctant initially the United States was to play this role. The authors capture the personalities of the men who led America and Europe in these years, particularly Clement Atlee, Harry Truman, Konrad Adenauer, and Alcide de Gasperi, and also recreate the political and social atmosphere of the postwar era. Of particular interest are the sections on the European Recovery Program and on the origins of the European Common Market. ISBN 1-55786-089-0: $69.95.
