Weakley was a native of Lancaster, Ohio, son of Elenor Weakley of New Jersey. He clerked in Baltimore, Maryland, and when his health began to fail he made two trips to Brazil (1847 and 1848) to reinvigorate his constituion. He returned to Ohio in 1850.
Summary note
Unpublished manuscript journal kept by Weakley: voyage aboard the brig Don Juan from Baltimore, Maryland, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 9 January to 25 March 1847; his stay in Rio, till 20 April; and then the return voyage from Rio to New York aboard the Hollander, from 20 April to 4 June 1847; 55], 1-(167), [3] pages, illustrated with 9 watercolor illustrations and 3 small pen-and-ink drawings; bound in new, quarter-bound morocco over marbled boards, old cover laid in. Weakley comments on Brazilian culture, religion, and society. 12 pages are devoted to the slave trade.
