4 bifolia, printed on one side only, leaves mounted on linen with first and last laid down to wrappers.
Text begins: "A very poor couple once lived in a village near a wood, where they used to work..."
Illustrations: 6 half- or three-quarter page wood engravings and one double-leaf center-fold (occupying three-quarters of both facing pages), hand-colored in red, green, purple, pink, yellow, and buff.
Routledge's second version of this toy book, the first issued in 1854 with Cruikshank ills. engraved by Daziel.
Binding note
Pub. orange wrappers, pictorial upper with vignette of Hop o' my Thumb before the King (repeating leaf [8]) under red-filled title, both within a red ruled border; lower wrapper with publisher's advertisement for New Juvenile Books, listing titles in several series: Aunt Mavor's, Routledge's Two-Shilling Books for Young Readers, and Nursery Rhymes for Children.
