Notes
Title printed at head of leaf in italic and outline san-serif fonts.
Approximate date based on printing, illus., and style of clothing depicted in vignette.
Victorian children's moveable alphabet, with a turning volvelle alphabet wheel (12 cm.), imprinted with capital letters and mounted underneath a single leaf, which has a small cut-out window through which one letter at a time is visible as the wheel is turned; some letters are printed together (i.e. "NO," "PQ," "RS," "UV," "YZ").
Illustrations: Leaf has wood-engraved family parlor scene on recto, set within ruled border, hand-colored in blue, green, yellow, red, and rose.
There is no indication, for either the Cotsen or Australia National Library copies (which seem virtually identical), that the leaf was ever attached to a book or other such item, although that is a possibility.
Cotsen copy: Alphabet wheel detached from leaf, although the mounting grommet is still attached to the leaf.
Cotsen copy: Small pin-holes at center top of leaf, suggest that the alphabet wheel may once have been tacked to a wall.
Cotsen item originally placed in with Dean & Co., pamphlet items.
