Notes
Date based on Warne's initial publication of the Aunt Louisa series in 1865 and the very early version of publishers advertisement on lower wrapper (a grieving Queen Victoria is shown, presumably for Prince Albert, who died in 1861).
Title, publisher, printer, and series from upper wrapper; series at head of title; later publisher's advertisements number this title as "1" in the series.
"One shilling"--At head of title.
3 bifolia with printed text (verse) and 3 with chromolithographs, bound so text and ills. are facing.
Text begins: "A's the arrival at the station: / All noise, and hurry, and sensation."
This version of the title distinct from Warne's later Aunt Louisa's Playtime Toy Books ed. (Cotsen 30407), and also from Routledge's 1865 title, executed by Crane and Evans (cf. Masaki).
Illustrations: 4 vignettes per leaf, each depicting the scene described in facing alphabet rhyme with Victorian railroad scenes and people, set against a black background and using large red upper- and lower-case alphabet letters; leaves are signed at bottom of leaf by Kronheim; among the people depicted are: a grieving Queen Victoria, "most dear in woe," an English Yeoman" bearing John Bull's name, and a Welsh trainman.
Binding note
Pub. yellow color-printed wrappers, upper with title letters in red, gray, and black, set within a patterned border of the same colors; lower wrapper with publisher's advertisement: Choice Books for Children (listing 2 titles) and Aunt Louisa's London Toy Books (listing 4 unnumbered titles, with this one as the third title listed).
