Approximate date based on publisher's advertisement on lower cover, which includes "The Great Panjandrum, Himself," first published in 1885.
"Printed and copyrighted by Edmund Evans, Ltd., Rose Place, Globe Road, London, E. 1"--At foot of publisher's advertisement on lower wrapper.
The rhyme's allegorical significance is sometimes mentioned, but Opie is skeptical (cf. Oxford Dict. of Nursery Rhymes, 1997, p. 470-2).
Illustrations: 8 chromoxlyographs and other pages with full or three-quarter page woodcut line-drawings in black-brown with text integrated into the design.
Binding note
Pub. off-white paper bds., within original glassine wrappers, with pictorial chromoxlyograph on upper (repeating design on p. 2), and publisher's advertisements, in red and black, on lower.
