Tentative date from frontis. engraving, dated "Dec. 1879."
A collection of verse and prose, most concerning small animals, birds, insects, sea-creatures or crustaceans; one of the first stories, "A Hedgehog Family ..." is signed at the end by "Fanny," and several subsequent stories are credited to "the author of 'A Hedgehog Family'"; another story credited to Langbridge.
Publisher's advertisements and catalog on [8] p. at end: Selected List of Messrs. Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co.'s Publications.
Illustrations: Frontis signed by Elwes, and 1-2 smaller illustrations on each page of the text, most signed by Griset (sometimes by name and sometimes "EG"), with some by Elwes, Branston, Marriott, and Fleming; decorative head- and tail-pieces, and decorated capitals at the beginning of individual works.
Cotsen copy: Book plate of S.J. Duke on front pastedown, with the poem: "Scan my contents, if you please, / Or if you like me learn me. / But spare my covers and my leaves, / And if I'm lent, return me."
