Summary note
Defective copy of the Qurʾān, comprising sūrah 1 to 100:2 (beginning). The first original leaf starts with the end of 2:50 (badly damaged).
Notes
  • Ms. codex.
  • Physical description: 15 lines per page ; on parchment ; in early Abbasid script (alif 7 mm.) ; red and green dots, a few diacriticals in black ink; some strokes in red (see fol. 60a).
  • Decoration in text: Rosettes mark the end of verses ; small circular devices consisting of inscription in gold on a ground left plain in a circle defined in gold, with dots outlined by a single line in black mark the end of five verses. Sūrah titles and verse counts written in gold outlined in black and complemented by medallion with decor of different types in gold and green on the margin (see fol. 24b, 39a, 66a, etc. ; palm motif in the medallion on fol. 54b). Medallions on the margin (see fol. 45a, 95a) for text divisions.
  • Fol. 1-2 are later replacement on paper with text supplied by a later hand in a style similar to that of the earlier portion of the copy. The eleven first original leaves (fol. 3-13) have large lacunas, with repairs in white paper.
  • Apparently 9th or first half of 10th century.
Binding note
Dark brown leather with blind stamped central mandorla with pendants on the vertical axis and corner pieces, all outlined in gold. Doublure in burgundy leather with gold and blue filigree central piece and corner pieces. Portion of the same doublure on the envelope flap. Slip-case with similar decoration.
