Summary note
  • Disc 1: Angels on the streets: Myeong-ja and Yong-gil are brother and sister, sold to guttersnipes when they were little. Now they must beg for each meal. One day, Yong-gil decides to run away from the guttersnipes and seeks refuge with a group of orphans. Bang Seong-bin witnesses Yong-gil being bullied by the orphans and brings him to his own home. 4-5 other orphans are already living there. Seong-bin wants to start up a welfare business for orphans and buys a plot of land to build an orphanage with the help of Ahn In-gyu, his doctor brother-in-law. The business starts up in earnest after his new orphanage, Hyangrinwon, is established. Meanwhile, Ahn In-gyu saves Myeong-ja, whom he ran into by chance, and has her work for him as a nurse.
  • Disc 2: Spring of Korean peninsula: Film producer Lee Yeong-il is introduced to Jeong-hee, his friend's little sister. Unable to find an appropriate slot for her in his movie, he gets her a job in a record company and watches out for her. Director Heo Hoon, who is making the film 'The Story of Chun-hyang' with Yeong-il, fires the lead actress of the film, Anna, when she causes too much trouble. Instead, Jeong-hee is hired in her place. Just as Jeong-hee proves herself worthy of the casting and the film-making progresses smoothly, Yeong-il and Heo Hoon face financial difficulties. Yeong-il turns to embezzlement in desperation and is thrown in jail.
  • Disc 3 : Volunteer: Chun-ho and Bun-ok love each other deeply. After his father dies, Chun-ho works as the supervisor of landlord Park's property in Seoul, and is torn up about the reality where Korean people cannot volunteer to serve in the army. Jealous of Chun-ho, Kim Deok-sam snatches the supervisor position from him. Meanwhile, Bun-ok is heartbroken after seeing Chun-ho with Soo-ae, the younger sister of Landlord Kim. On the other hand, Chun-ho sees Bun-ok together with his friend Chang-sik and gets the wrong impression about their relationship. In the end, Chang-sik learns how to drive and leaves for Seoul while Bun-ok and Chun-ho resolve their misunderstandings. When Koreans become eligible to serve in the army, Chun-ho volunteers and the news of his acceptance appears in the papers. Landlord Kim is greatly moved at this news and promises to watch over his house. Chun-ho gets on the troop train, leaving his beloved Bun-ok behind.
  • Disc 4: Straits of Chosun: Seong-gi is back home and bowing his head in front of the photo of his older brother Seong-cheon, who died while fighting in the war. The father is angered at his younger son, who chose to run away from home when his parents opposed the girl he was seeing. He takes it out on his wife and this upsets his younger sister Cheong-ja. Seong-gi had moved in with Geum-sook but when he hears about his brother's death, he leaves her without knowing that she is pregnant with his child. Seong-gi goes to his uncle who had been watching after him until then and tells him that he will volunteer to serve in the army, to follow his brother's footsteps.
Notes
  • Title from container.
  • 4 feature-length Korean films from the 1940s found in the China Film Archive in 2004.
  • "The supplement of this collection contains the commentaries of a senior film critic, Kim Jong-won and the interviews of an actor Song Hwan-chang who starred in An Angel without a House. Most of all, the interview of Song could function as a precious material about the circumstances of film production and the theatrical culture at that time. The thesis of Lee Soon-jin, a researcher on the Korean film history in this brochure will show a way to comprehend the film culture of the period more deeply. The original scenario of An Angel without a House that the Korean Film Archive collected at Kawakita Memorial Film Institute of Japan in 2005 is also inserted in this brochure. It is donated by the widow of Nishikame Motosada who wrote it, which Lim Hwa translated to Korean dialogues. With this as a momentum, we hope to generate more various contexts and point of views and to make bloom of the study on the films and social cultural history in the 1930s and 1940s."--Korean Film Archive's website.
