  • The cooking pot is black with bright red lips, dispute in which the pot calls the kettle black p. 44-45.
  • The color plates and many of the red and black illustrations by Jane Allen Boyer in an Arts and Crafts style. The illustrations by Margaret Hays are sadly inferior, being stiff and unimaginative, including the cover design.
  • In one chapter Mary Frances prepares a cup of tea and an omelet for a tramp, but is warned against doing so by her father.
