Summary note
Elegant copy of a lexicon of unusual words used in ḥadīth. This copy comprises the text up to the end of Bāb al-dhāl maʻa al-yāʾ. Beginning of copy wanting. The first extant quire starts on fol. 10a in the modern foliation (fol. 2a).

Physical description: 19 lines per page. Written in medium large naskh (professional hand) in black ink with scarce use of red; larger script in black ink for headings. The text is vocalized. Entries are written on the margin. Thick dark cream and light peach paper, with laid and chain lines visible. Majority of quinions. Modern foliation in pencil using Western numerals (counts the first fly-leaves as fol. 1-8).
Collation: Paper, fol. viii, 303, i ; viii (later added fly-leaves; European paper with watermark; fol. 1-8 in modern foliation) 1 (1 leaf ; rest of quire wanting) 2-22¹⁰ 23⁹ 24-31¹⁰ 32 (3 leaves) i (fly-leaf; European paper wih watermark) ; catchword on the verso of each leaf ; the quires are numbered using Arabic ordinals, in the form of "al-Thālith" (see fol. 10a in the modern foliation) and "Tāsiʻ min awwal" (see fol. 70a).
Inscription on fol. (i)a: "al-Jild al-awwal min al-thālith". Inscription on fol 1a (upper margin): "Nihāyah li-Ibn al-Athīr maʻa nuqṣān min al-awwal wa-ikhtaṣarahu al-Imām al-Suyūṭī raḥimahu Allāh". Before fol. 1, pasted piece of paper with note on the text.
Origin: According to colophon, copied by Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyá ibn ʻAbd al-Walī ibn Abī Muḥammad ibn Khawlān, Baʻlbak, 26 Shawwāl 733 [July 10, 1333] (fol. 311b).
Incipit: بفتح الهمزة وضم الرآء وحآء مهملة قرية بالشام
Explicit: ذامًا الذّام والذيم العيب وقد يهمنى ومنه حديث عائشة قالت لليهود عليكم الشام والذام وقد [311ب] تقدّم في اول الحرف
Binding note
Brown leather over paper pasteboards for upper and lower covers. Traces of a now wanting flap. Both covers are similarly blind and gold tooled. Central eight-pointed star filled with a geometrical pattern and gold impressions of a small stamp, and square pendants on the vertical axis, in a panel defined by fillets and an large border of fillets and a running pattern. Embossed leather doublure. Edges and spine mended.
