Date from Spencer and Masaki, who notes a single toy book ed. (Opie provides a date of c.1873).
Title, publisher, and series from cover; printer from lower wrapper.
4 chromoxylograph bifolia, printed on one side only, with text inset into boxes integrated into page design; leaves 1 and 8 pasted down to inside wrappers.
Illustrations: 8 full-page chromoxylographs with gold capitals and and humorous exemplifications of each letter set against black backgrounds, each signed with Crane's "WC" crane glyph.
Cotson c. 2: White Cotsen bookplate dated 1978.
Binding note
Pub. yellow wrappers with chromoxylograph design by Crane (integrating a schoolmaster crane into the design) on upper wrapper in green, red, and black, and cover title set into a centered box; publisher's advertisement for "Routledge's New Sixpenny Toy Books" on lower, which lists "The Absurd ABC" as #110 in the series.
Cotsen c. 1: 13 other Crane toy book titles (12 in the order issued, from "My Mother" to "Sleeping Beauty"), bound together in later bright blue cloth boards with the lower wrapper of each toy book removed during rebinding.
