Notes
"A limited edition of one hundred sixty-six copies ... six, lettered "A-F," have been reserved for the publishers. Fifteen copies, lettered "G-U," contain a leaf with a large decorated initial"--Publisher's prospectus.
Each copy is bound in maroon quarter-morocco and issued in slipcase; the accompanying original leaf is issued in linen portfolio; in linen clamshell box (53 cm.).
"Census of the extant copies of the 1462 Bible": p. 31-40.
Ex copy: Complete with box and Bible leaf.
Ex copy has leaf with text of I Kings 21:5-22:42.
Ex copy has leaf with blue initial floriated in red: "characteristic of this style is the custom of drawing two small parallel strokes that cross the spiral lines [of the pen flourishes in red]. This feature originated from the idea that the flourishes are not considered as lines, but are to be seen as portraying a type of spiky shrub or plant, the branches of which are imagined to be attached to a wall by means of a wooden or metal clasp. Transposed to paper, the image suggests that two cuts were made in the paper through which the branches were then pulled, the small strip functioning to secure them." -- p. 26.
"The nineteenth-century entries, such as that referring to 'Ann Clarkes,' are clearly English and indicate that the book had been in England for some time. Equally, the earlier notes in the margins show characteristics of English handwriting. This establishes that the copy must have been in England from at least the sixteenth century." -- p. 27.
