Summary note

Treatise on rhetoric (ʻilm al-balāgha), based on the author's epitome Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ, to which this present work is like a commentary, with material from Miftāḥ al-ʻulūm [by al-Sakkākī] and Dalāʼil al-iʻjāz and Asrār al-balāghah by ʻAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī (preamble, fol. 2b). The text is followed on fol. 213b-218a by a gloss by ʻUbayd Allāh ibn Masʻūd ibn Tāj al-Sharīʻah, entitled Ajwibat iʻtirāḍāt fī al-Talkhīṣ wa-al-Īḍāḥ ʻalá Sāḥib al-Miftāḥ, apparently written by the same hand. It is preceded on fol. 1b-2a by a short text written by a later hand on the definition of "al-ḥaqīqah", with an interlinear and marginal gloss.

• Marginal and interlinear annotations, apparently by the same hand as the main text. Several small slips of paper with annotations inserted between folios. Fol. 1 and 219 are later additions in European paper with watermark, with inscriptions, including verses of poetry and short definitions. Fol. 2 consists of a leaf of similar paper pasted on the recto of an original folio. Fol. 218 consists of a leaf of similar paper pasted on the verso of an original fol. Inscriptions by another hand on fol. 218a, including the verses "raqqa al-zujāj wa-raqqat al-khamr ... ". On fol. 1b-2a, short text, apparently in the same hand as the inscriptions on fol. 1a, 218a and 219b. Inscription "450" in black ink, using Western numerals, on the pastedown of the upper cover (corresponds to Brill's list ; see Houtsma, M. Th. Catalogue d'une collection de manuscrits arabes et turcs, no. 432).

• Layout: 15-34 lines per page.
• Description: Written in casual thick taʻlīq or casual small thick naskh in black ink ; reference marks, overlining, re-inking and text-stops (teardrops, in groups of three) in red ink.
• Paper: Thick soft cream paper, glossy, with laid and chain lines and pulp visible.
• Origin: [Īḍāḥ] Copy completed in Baldat Qar/z--? [Hitti reads Quraym] by Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf on Yawm al-Jumʻah 1 ("fī ghurrah") Shaʻbān 762 [June 1361] (colophon, fol. 213a). Statement on the margin of the colophon, indicating that this book was read in front of ʻAlā al-Dīn al-Sukhūmī, dated Qar/z--, on a Thursday at the end of Jumādá al-Ākhar 763 [April 1362] -- [Ajwibat] copy completed at the end of Rabīʻ al-Ākhar 745 [Sept. 1344] in Bukhārā (end of text, fol. 218a).
• Incipit (fol. 1b): واعلم انّ القول بتعريف الحقيقة باللام واستعرافها مشكل -- [الايضاح] الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلوته على سيدنا محمد وآله اجمعين اما بعد فهذا كتاب فى علم البلاغة وتوابعها ترجمته بالايضاح وجعلته على مختصرى الذى سميته تلخيص المفتاح وبسطت فيه ... مقدمة فى الكشف عن معنى الفصاحة والبلاغة وانحصار علم البلاغة فى علمى المعانى والبيان -- [اجوبة] قال صاحب المفتاح علم المعانى هو تتبع خواص تراكيب الكلام ... فقال صاحب الايضاح وفيه نظر اذ التتبع ليس بعلم ولا صادق عليه ... اقول التتبع هو الاتباع بالتكلّف فاذا قيل فلان يتتبع مذهب ابى حنيفة رحمه الله اى يتعلّم معلوماته

Binding note

Type II (with flap) binding in brown leather and purple paper over cardboard. Silver (or faded gold?) roll on the edge of the paper. The fore-edge flap has impression of the same roll and of a stamp with a leaf pattern. Purple pastedown and free endpaper (green paper for the envelope flap pastedown ; green cloth doublure on the fore-edge flap).
