Second volume of a copy of a commentary on al-Hidāyah, a commentary by ʻAlī ibn Abī Bakr al-Marghīnānī (d. 593/1197) on his compendium of Ḥanafī law, Bidāyat al-mubtadiʼ fī furūʻ al-fiqh al-Ḥanafī, comprising the text from Kitāb al-Nikāḥ to the end.

Physical description: 29 lines per page. Written in clear square medium small naskh in black ink with use of red for key words and overlinings. Headings in larger script in red ink. Light cream paper, glossy, with laid and chain lines visible ; frame-ruled. Marginal annotations. Partial table of contents on fol. 2a.
Inscription in Arabic script on a label pasted on the upper cover: "Thānī 223". Inscription in Arabic script on a label pasted on the pastedown of the upper cover: "321 Ḥāʼ".
Collation: Paper, fol. i, 225, i ; i (later added endpaper; European paper with watermark) 1¹⁰ (+2, fol. 1-2) 2-21¹⁰ 22¹⁰ (+ 3, after fol. 222) i (later added endpaper; European paper with watermark) ; catchword on the verso of each leaf ; the quires are numbered using Arabic ordinals in the form "thānī" (see fol. 13a ; often cut off due to the trimming of the pages).
Origin: Copy completed on Thursday 7 Rajab 850 [Sept. 28, 1446] by Muḥammad Shāh Ibn Abī Bakr al-Ḥamawī (colophon, fol. 224a).
Binding note
Dark brown leather over paper pasteboards for uppe and lower covers fore-edge flap and envelope flap. Both covers are similarly blind stamped and tooled, with a central stamped mandorla with floral arabesque, outlined by a single line with radiating flecks. The outer border consists of several fillets. The envelope flap has a similar border and a small roundel on its point. The gold used to outline the central mandorla and for some of the fillets of the border is now visible only on the envelope flap. Yellow paper pastedowns. Leather doublure for fore-edge flap.
