Notes
  • "This album had been given by Burne-Jones to his daughter Margaret before she was married. When she was married and had her daughter Angela, Burne-Jones came to stay with them and began making these drawings (the granddaughter was 18 months at the time). In addition to the 14 full-page captioned drawings, there are another 15 pages bearing captions on which he had clearly planned to make drawings.
  • Some of the drawings at the beginning are clearly intended for a child, that of the baby seated in a farmyard at sunrise, "Portrait of her own tiger," another view of the farmyard, "Cats School," "Seminary for More Advanced Dragonbabies," However, the other drawings are clearly not intended for a toddler, notably "Dragon's Home," "The City of Brass," "The Sphinx of the Desert," "The Well at eh World's End," and the captions for the planned illustrations such as "The Book of Terrors of Waste Lands and First of Heath-Worms" must have been intended for his own entertainment or for some planned work.
Binding note
