First quarter of Baghawī's commentary of the Qurān, comprising the commentary of sūrah 1 to 4.

Title from colophon (fol. 249b).
25 lines per page. Written in medium large naskh in black ink with use of red for re-inking, punctuation and decoration. Headings in larger script in black ink. Dark cream thick paper with pulp and laid lines visible. The two first folios are later additions. Collation notes on the margins. Worm eaten.
Two spine labels with inscriptions (vertical), respectively "Tafsīr al-Baghawī" (in Arabic script), and "209" (in Arabic and Western numerals).
Copy completed on Wednesday 17 Jumādá al-Ākhar 731 [March 1331] by Aḥmad Ibn ʻAlī Ibn Taymarī(?) in Ḥamāh (colophon, fol. 249b).
Incipit: قال الشيخ الامام الاجل العالم ... ابو محمد الحسين بن مسعود البغوي المعروف بالفرا ... الحمد لله ذي العظمة والكبريا والعزة
Explicit: يومًا ترجعون فيه الى الله فعاشر بعدها احدًا وعشرين يومًا
Binding note
Dark brown leather over paper pasteboards for upper and lower covers. Both covers are similarly blind tooled with a central square motif, consisting of four small floral stamps, with two pendants on the vertical axis. Outer frame made of several fillets, with outlined inner corners. Paper pastedown. Rebacked and repaired.
