Summary note
A commentary on Wiqāyat al-riwāyah fī masāʼil al-Hidāyah, a work on fiqh by the author's grandfather, Maḥmūd ibn Ṣadr al-Sharīʻah al-Maḥbūbī (d. 1274 or 5). As for the work itself, Wiqāyat al-riwāyah is an epitome of the work called al-Hidāyah by ʻAlī ibn Abī Bakr al-Marghīnānī (d. 1196 or 7).

  • Copy completed in the middle of Dhū al-Ḥijjah 958 (1551) by Muḥammad Mūsá -- colophon (fol. 280b).
  • 19 lines per page. Written in small nastaʻlīq in black ink with use of red for rubrication. Text is written within a frame outlined with one line in red ink. Catchwords on the verso of each leaf. Foliation in Arabic numerals in black ink, laced with gold glitter, and in Western numerals in pencil. Glazed European paper. Fol. 1a-b has a table of contents in black and red ink. Substantial marginal annotations throughout. Fol. 2a has the title and an excerpt from Birgivi mehmet Efendi ("li-marḥūm Muḥammad Chelebī al-shahīr bi-Birkilī"). Several other short inscriptions on same folio and fol. 1b. A lot of the leaves are loose and there is some worm damage to paper, but no loss of text.

Binding note
Dark burgundy leather with envelope flap. Upper cover is a replacament from a different binding in brown leather. Upper cover has blind fillets and small rosetta stamps around borders, and a blind stamped central mandorla. Lower cover has a gold central design made with a diamond shaped mesh pattern with double lines radiating along the vertical and horizontal axes, and a gold roll and fillets around borders. The envelope flap has a similar design with a small circular gold motif and roll and fillets around edges. Spine and lower side of the envelope flap repaired with different leather. Pastedowns and lining to the envelope flap in yellow paper. Lining to the fore edge flap in dark burgundy leather with gold fillets around borders. Flyleaves in green paper.
