Abridgment of the author's Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, an abridgment of Tahdhīb al-kamāl fī maʻrifat al-rijāl, a summary by Jamāl al-Dīn Yūsuf ibn ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mizzī (d. 742/1341) of al-Kamāl fī maʻrifat al-rijāl by Taqī al-Dīn al-Jammāʻīlī (d. 600/1203).

• Title from title page (fol. 1a). The title appears at the beginning of text as Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb (fol. 3a, l. 22-23).
• 29 lines per page. Written in medium small naskh in black ink with use of red for entries. Light cream paper with pulp visible. Fol. 1b-2a: Blank. Inscription in Arabic script on a label pasted on the pastedown of the upper cover: "Ḥāʼ 17".
• Note mentioning the date 850 H. [1446 or 7] and the number of quires (33) at the end of the text (fol. 224a).

Binding note

Upper and lower covers, fore-edge flap and envelope flap wrapped into green cloth. Only the upper cover is visible, brown leather over paper pasteboards, with blind stamped central mandorla and outer border consisting of several fillets. Dark brown, light brown, red and white marbled paper pastedown and free endpaper.

Provenance

Two ownership statements on fol. 1a: one signed Aḥmad Abū --- al---- ; the other signed Aḥmad Najīb ibn Aḥmad Ṭāhir, who bought the ms. from al-Ṣaḥāf Asʻad Afandī, with date. Inscription "Madrasah-ʼī Ḥaḍrat Muṣṭafá Bābā dar ---" on the upper margin of fol. 3a. Waqf, see stamp on fol. 10b, 155a, 178a, 224a, etc., reading "Waqf al-marḥūm Muṣṭafá al-ʻAtīq ṭāliban li-marḍā Rabbihi al-karīm li-madrasah fī Qusṭanṭinīyah al-maḥmīyah", dated 1022 H. [1613 or 14]. Acquired from Abraham Shalom Yahuda, 1942.
