Summary note
The data are from a study of the validity of a machine-coded event data series for six Middle Eastern actors (Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinians and Syria) and the United States for the period 1982-1992. The series is based on Reuters newswire leads coded into the WEIS (McClelland 1976) categories using the Kansas Event Data System (KEDS) Macintosh computer program. The machine-coded data were compared to a human-coded WEIS data set coded from the New York Times and Los Angeles Times using monthly aggregations based on Goldstein's (1992) scale. The archived files include the event data coded from Reuters (53,090 events), dyadic monthly aggregations of the machine-coded data and the human-coded data, the dictionaries used by KEDS to do the coding, and BinHex 4.0 files of the KEDS program, its manual, and a data display program.
