Contained in
Multi-title collection including A little book for children and youth : being good counsel and instructions for your children, earnestly exhorting them to resist the temptation of the Devil... and 1 other(s).
Summary note
Overly-indulged, prodigal son, John Wats, angered at having been denied money by his father, is approached by the Devil, who offers him 12 years of wealth for his soul, which is eventually grudgingly forfeited on a "dreadful night".
Notes
"Licensed and entered according to order"--At foot of t.p.
Signed: "Robert Kent" on p. [5].
Date and place of publication from BL record for this title (ESTC T25783) with similar text but a different setting of type (one also lacking the sermon text and ""Prayer").
The 3 1/2 page "Timely warning" is followed by a 2 1/2 p. sermon (from James 13, 14, 15) and a half-page "Prayer against temptation."
Illustrations: T.p. with 3/4 page woodcut of a conjurer with the devil, very reminiscent of earlier cuts showing Dr. Faustus and the devil.
Cotsen copy: Bound with: A little book for children and youth by Robert Russel.
Binding note
Cotsen copy: Lacks original wrappers; bound in later dark brown full calf, blind-tooled on covers and gilt-stamped with titles of both works on upper.
