• Copperplate picture lessons for children, in part very unusual for the period. Next to the depictions of subjects usual for such series: Morning prayers, Kitchen, Writing and Classrooom, Drawing room, Departure, Return, the Happpy Home, Shopping, etc, we also see socially critical depictions, which do not accord with the so-called good Middle-class, but which are associated with the lower classes: Household Misery (a man beating his wife), Moving house (one who doesn't like to move buys his own house), Window Washing, Washing and Ironing, a Wedding table, the Bedroom (parents share with baby), Christmas with a picture of a Christmas tree. Though described as a tree in the caption, the depiction is of a richly decorated tree branch, set in what appears to be part of a butter churn. The dealer wonders if the depiction represents a setting in which the christmas tree as a tree is not so thoroughly established, or whether the family is one that cannot afford the more expensive tree (see Sigrid Otto, 'Zur Geschichte des Weihnachtsbaum', Kindergalerie der Staatlichen Museen zur Berlin, 1992, p. 8 & pasism.
